Course Description

All participants start at Tempe Beach Park, on the south bank, just west of the Mill Avenue Bridge.

  • The swim takes place in a manmade lake that is very calm unless there are high winds (i.e. storm force). The swim course will be a rectangle for both sprint and international athletes. Water temperatures will be approximately 80 degrees. We will be monitoring and posting the temperature of the lake right up to the event (Note: 78 degrees is considered wetsuit legal by USAT).
  • The bike portion is a relatively flat, urban, looped course; each loop is approximately 12.3 miles.
  • The run is a 3.1-mile loop around Tempe Town Lake with some great views of ASU and the developing landscape of Tempe. International distance athletes must complete two loops of both the bike and run course.

Historically, the weather race day has seen high temperatures in the low 90s, with lows in the mid 60s. It’s a dry heat!

Race Divisions

  • Age groups are broken down into 5-year increments, based on your age as of December 31 of race year.
  • Relay teams consist of two or three members. For 2-person teams, one person must do two of the legs. For 3-person teams, each person does one leg. We've seen some great team names and costumes so feel free to be creative!

Eilte & Age Group Divisions

  • Elite: Competitive level paratriathletes who fall into one of the six ITU paratriathlon categories (may or may not be classified at local events, but must be classifiable at USAT Paratriathlon Nationals and all ITU events).
  • Age Group: Those who have not been classified or who want to race as a physically challenged athlete, but who also do not want to race within the ITU race categories and/or the rules within those categories (ie. Tri 1 athlete who would like to use a handcycle for both the bike and the run portion of the event). This group should not be split into categories and if possible should be a separate wave from the Paratriathlon Elite wave.
